Microsoft releases UltimateTV service upgrade

(Posted on 9 April 2002 6:45 pm)

Bill Gates' Microsoft Corp. has offered a software upgrade for its UltimateTV service. The upgrade significantly enhances system performance, improves overall ease of use, and introduces several new features and enhancements that give users more control when recording and playing back television programmes, says the company. Microsoft delivered the upgrade to subscribers through the DirectTV digital satellite service at no additional charge.

According to an official release, the upgrade came about since subscriber feedback said that they wanted a faster service and more control over how they manage their personal programming lineup.

Service enhancements of the upgrade include :

  • Automatic recording of programmes that match subscribers' interests. Now UltimateTV can be set to continuously search for and record programs that match subscribers' interests, whether the programmes are scheduled to air next week, next month or next year.
  • More control over recorded programs. Now multiple shows of the same title are grouped together in My Shows, making it easier to view and manage recorded programs.
  • Easy management of upcoming recordings. The enhanced UltimateTV service gives subscribers ways to keep an eye on their upcoming recordings.

The UltimateTV service claims to allow viewers to record up to 70 hours of digital-quality programming so they can watch their favorite TV programs on their own schedule.
