Maruti Udyog ltd zooms ahead of Hyundai Motor to be the top advertiser on TV in 2003
(28 April 2004)

Lets look at one of the leading categories on TV from the automobile sector- Cars and Jeeps. The boom in the automobile industry has also benefited TV channels in terms of advertising revenues from the cars and jeeps category.

Firstly, let's see which advertisers topped TV advertising in 2002. Hyundai Motor India ltd was the top advertiser then, accounting for a little over 20 per cent (one fifth) of the share. Tata Motors and Maruti Udyog were ranked second and third respectively with shares close to 15 per cent.

Does the chart show the same results, on analysing the numbers, for the year 2003? Let's look at the graph below.

Interestingly, Maruti climbed up the ladder to top the list with a share close to 30 per cent, while Hyundai Motor slipped to the fourth spot managing just a 10 per cent share. Tata Motors continues to be in the second place.

Going a bit further, let's look at the results for Q1 2004.

Maruti has further consolidated its top position, its share in advertising has increased to nearly 50 per cent. Hyundai's slump is still continuing, and it has dropped to the ninth place. Tata Motors, as consistent as ever, is hanging on to the second spot. General Motors has grabbed the third place.

So, which were the top brands advertising on TV in 2003?

One can see a sea of Maruti brands (as many as four of them) in this list with Wagon R topping the list enjoying a share of 8 per cent. Mahindra Scorpio also sits pretty with a nearly same share. Tata's Indica V2 is ranked third with a share of nearly 7.5 per cent.

Finally, let's look at the program genres in which cars and jeep prefer to advertise?

The pie shows that nearly half of the advertising happens during feature films and news bulletins, whereas the other major program genres during which cars and jeeps are advertised are dramas, soaps and cricket.

We shall be coming out with similar such analyses in future. Keep watching this space for more...
