Mumbai shakes its booty to rhythm divine

(Posted on 12 April 2004)

"Come to Enrique Iglesias concert to get laid," he said. Not sure how that would be possible with the kind of turn out ... but man was it hot! Skeptics call the Bailmos singer a sugar boy for teeny bop crowd, but ground packed to its seams had a different story to tell.

Sizzling Latino pop sensation Enrique Iglesias rocked the city on 11 April at the MMRDA Grounds in the suburb of Bandra. Don't believe our words... here is an excerpt from diary of a 15 year old Iglesias fan

Dear diary,

I wished the evening would never end... had a hellaluva time today! We waited for cool two hours for the Spanish pop idol Enrique Iglesias, but boy was it worth wait. For once he took on that mike, he swept us off our feet.

Gawd... how I envy those two dudes, who got to drink beer (Kingfisher mind you) with Iglesias and how I would just die to be in Vrinda's (or was it Simon's) shoes. Not only did he pick her on the stage... he went on his knees crooned for her. And that was quite a kiss that they shared. Lucky lucky, but never mind... at least I saw him right there as he belted out Rhythm Divine (Enrique), Love to see you cry (Escape) and Could I have this kiss forever (Enrique) and some Spanish numbers too. That of course, besides a lipsmacking performance from his new album Seven.

Seems like just yesterday that I read that the Latin pop sensation would be performing in India. I hear that the organisers have been in talks for three years, wonder what took them so long.

Dad was saying something about the entertainment taxes being pretty steep, but never mind. All that mattered was that he would be here now... oh how I weeped when those ugly goons shot him in his Hero video.

For days, we just talked about the concert during lunch hour. And how I had to butter dad to dole out cash for the concert.

Niki's dad almost threw a fit when we told him that it would be just couple of girls that would go for the concert. Only when her elder brother promised to keep an eye on us was it okay. If getting the tickets was a problem, what to wear to the event was an even bigger issue.

Finally the day arrived, all of us dressed in our 'Sunday best' (nothing of that sort, but I really like the sound of it) we reached the MMRDA grounds a little before 6 pm. As we reached the spot we had this serpentine queue ahead of us. In we were ushered, albeit not that gently, amidst a pool of humanity, and man were there grown ups! Moms, dads, uncles and aunts... quite a few television actors too. We squirmed our way right in front the railing near the stage to get the better view. Psst... people had been queuing since 1 pm, I hear.

Well, that's that but once we were let in all that was remaining to be done was kill time. Seriously! While the local band Aquaflow crooned some enjoyable international numbers, the heat was making us impatient and it didn't help that the MTV VJ's Malaika and Nikhil, the host for the evening were such a tease.

Quite a few girls and boys fainted, not coz' they saw Iglesias on the stage but coz' the wait coupled with the heat was unbearable. And then there were these Anna chants, and no she did not come up on the stage anytime. Instead, the lady was tucked away in special arena near the stage. Meanwhile UB group's head honcho Vijay Mallya did make his presence felt and gave away an Enrique trophy to a lucky winner. Little before that I did spy on Anil Ambani, who was given a guided tour by Mallya himself.

In strode the socialite AKA page three crowd comprising Shahrukh Khan's other half Gauri Khan, Yash Birla and co at 8:15. Since they didn't mingle in the crowd, I presume they must be seated near Ms Kurnikova.

What with Malaika reading out the list twice and the complete ads being shown on the screens more than once, the advertisers had a gala time till then.

Enrique made quite an entry at 8:45 pm and the stage was lit violet. I heard that the stage was specially flown in to Mumbai and it was like a rare occasion that Enrique's entire production crew was at an concert. The set was complete with the steering wheel prop, but frankly speaking the effects were not that great. Even the cameras seem to be having some initial problem. They seem to be fixed at a point quite below Enrique's belt.

He jumped and he grooved and he serenaded the co-singer with seemingly 'honest' emotions. But I liked it; compete with his chat about himself and his band. I almost thought the concert was over but just as we were about to move to the exit came ... Hero... he is such a tease.

Hmmm.. the event ended and I hear that Mallya's group UB breweries would be bringing in Beyonce next. Next stop bootilicious but before that ... Adios...
