Indiantelevision.com's First Take on Sony's 'Sambhav Asambhav'

Sambhav Asambhav - turning to the supernatural for succour
(Posted on 5 May 2003)

A far cry from the regular saas bahu dramas is what
Sambhav Asambhav is, a weekly that premiered on Sony Entertainment Television on 1 May, is all about.
It is the story of an ordinary family and ordinary people caught in a very extraordinary situation… a reincarnation that changes their lives! Not entirely preposterous, Sambhav Asambhav does have the potential of hooking the audiences who are craving to see something 'different'.

Based on a Gujarati novel of the same name, written by Harkisan MehtaAmar Nath, a successful industrialist, loses his wife Meera during the birth of their son - Siddharth. 25 years later, Siddharth brings home to his father, the love of his life - Maya. In typical filmi style, Maya is shown experiencing some familiar vibes when she comes to Siddharth's house. The stereotypical dialogue "Mujhe lagta hai main yahan pehle bhi aa chuki hoon," no doubt, gives the audience a clue about the basic premise of the story.

Ironically, Maya visits Siddharth's house on the very same day that his mother had expired. Again, somewhat unbelieveable and coincidental. What takes the cake is the way Maya faints after having a minute's eye to eye contact with her would-be father-in-law in the first episode. Sambhav... does claim to be a thrilling drama touching the complexities of human relationships in a gripping series. "Paranormal, supernatural elements of storytelling have always fascinated me. You could call me M Night Shyamlam from the Indian soil I guess," quips director Anant Mahadevan who has earlier handled offbeat topics like Sony's Devi.

Shot at various locales in and around Mumbai, like Film City, Mona Kapoor Studio and Madh Island, the serial does boast of grand sets and palatial homes with all the gloss and grandeur that the audiences by now, have got used to seeing. Sangeeta Ghosh who plays the role of Maya says,"I opted for the role because as an actor I have never played a role like this one before. Moreover, very rarely do serials get a chance to air these days and Sony is a very good channel," she adds.

I opted for this serial is because I found the story rather gripping and it imbibes the values of literary culture," says veteran actor Vikram Gokhale who plays the role of Amar Nath. Producer Amar Butala agrees. "I have been holding onto this story for three years now and from the minute I heard the premise I loved it! Now I feel the wait was well worth it, the casting, the creative as well as the timing of the show is perfect. I think Sony's enthusiasm is infectious. As a producer I believe in involving the channel right from the start. At a time when family dramas are the order of the day, I'm confident this show will give viewers a solid alternative."

Sunil Lulla, Executive Vice President, Sony Entertainment Television is more practical when it comes to describing the show. "Sambhav Asambhav is one of the shows which reflects Sony's focus on the core demographic of 25-34 yrs, women and men, SEC ABC." Rajesh Devraj, Executive Creative Director, Sony Entertainment Television, adds, "Belief in the supernatural and reincarnation - are concepts eternally intriguing to Indian viewers. Sambhav Asambhav presents a new spin on a familiar theme, with the daughter-in-law in the pivotal role."

The story has various twists and turns and needs the right kind of treatment to keep the audiences glued to their television sets.
