Peppy 'Love Marriage' on Zee has the zest, needs promo push
(Posted on 2 August 2002)

Love Marriage, the latest offering from Zee TV, appears to be right on track.

Based on the travails and joys that four young ladies go through their lives in pursuit of a soul mate and a career in the city of Mumbai, it has excellent performances from the four artistes - Aditi Pratap (Anu), Tisca Chopra ( Kiran), Kanchan Mirchandani ( Meera), and Sheeba Chadha ( Sonali) - who play the leads.

At the time of writing this, five episodes had been telecast and the story had whizzed from a not-so-happy reunion of the four friends in the present, to a flashback 10 years ago, when the four had just landed in Mumbai.

So far, short vignettes of the four girls have been sketched. Kiran, a conservative girl brought up in a convent, wants to make it in Mumbai as a secretary or as an assistant in a big company. However, under pressure from college friend Shekhar, she lets herself be conned into meeting shady producers and directors, until she can't take it anymore and leaves a shoot midway, where the unit is acting funny with her. Shekhar loses his temper, following her action and breaks a mirror with his bare hands.

The second girl, Anu, is engaged to a man in Allahabad, but has come to Mumbai to make her career in an ad agency. She has so far managed to impress her married boss - who both she and Maya, a colleague at the office, are angling for - and a client, thanks to a campaign concept she draws up for promoting a line of lingerie.

The third girl, Meera, is a writer from Delhi whose boyfriend Vishal has deserted her for another. She discovers this when she comes to Mumbai to surprise him. And he is upset with her because he blames her for the loss of his job. The fourth girl, Sonali, has journeyed from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, to become a star, leaving behind her past, but is once again being hoodwinked by a shady character. There is more to her past then has been revealed so far.

The target group for the series appears to be the youth, and the series has been produced and scripted/screenplayed by Mohanjit Mozez Singh, a young producer who many in the industry say is bubbling with talent. Manisha Singh wields the director's baton, who is also the executive producer.

The series so far seems to be very Dil Chahta Hai-ish and has its uplifting moments when the four friends are interacting with each other. You get the feel that it is the work of young people and not some old fogey producers. Especially well-conveyed is the friendly banter and playfulness that single women friends tend to display when they come together.

According to Mozez, he has attempted to break stereotypes and has gone for characters who do not follow the norm, who look simple and are not glamorous; they are the girls next door. However, what has been a letdown is the performances of the male actors (with the exception of Mamik, who plays Anu's boss Ravi Shah).

Overall, Love Marriage shows promise. Now what is needed is a promotional push for the show that has the potential to make some inroads into Sony's Kutumb and Kkusum territory.
