| MUMBAI:
This week on Talk Back, Brinda Karat, Politburo Member and well known communist
politician from India, elected to the Rajya Sabha from the Communist Party of
India (Marxist) talks to Hindol Sengupta on how the Left has been proved right
by the recession. In this interview she talks about how regulation has helped
India to keep away from some of the impacts of the global economic crisis. On
the other hand, she also talks about how de-regulation and liberalization is making
the Indian economy weaker and more vulnerable to an imminent economic tsunami. Speaking
her mind, she lashes out against the Insurance Bill being passed, stating that
this will lead to the opening of the Indian insurance sector to American companies
which have lost credibility in the West. She also talks about the fact that the
current monetary policy will not be adequate to kick-start the economy all over
again. She advises that the government should take up widespread fiscal policies
like infrastructure spending and job creation to fight recession in the country.
