MUMBAI:
NDTV swept the Transparency International India (TII) awards ceremony
held in the city on March 15, 2008 by winning, both the Gold and
the Silver category awards in electronic media for "excellence
in exposing corruption", by its ace journalists Poonam Agarwal
and Sidharth Pandey. Their stories, 'BMW Expose' and 'Mined to Death'
were telecast on NDTV's flagship news channels NDTV 24x7 and NDTV
India.

Special Correspondent Poonam Agarwal and Cameraperson Deepak Verma
won The Rai Bahadur M.S Oberoi Media Award for the year 2007 in
the Gold category for 'BMW expose' story. Poonam's story exposed
the nexus between the prosecution and defense lawyer to win over
the key witness in the infamous BMW hit-and-run case. The 'BMW Expose'
telecast for the first time on May 30, 2007, revealed the corruption
prevailing in the judiciary and had a huge impact. The Delhi High
Court issued suo motto cognition against both the lawyers, Mr. R.K.
Anand and Mr. I.U. Khan.
The
Rai Bahadur M S Oberoi Media Award for the year 2007 in the Silver
category was bagged by NDTV's Chief Correspondent(Investigation)
Sidharth Pandey and Cameraperson Deepak Verma for their story 'Mined
to Death'. This was a special investigation story which tracked
illegal miners at work across the three states of Delhi, Haryana
and Rajasthan. Following the expose UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi
wrote to the Haryana government to file a status report. The Supreme
Court's Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has termed the revelations
as serious violations of law and a threat to forests and ecology
of the areas in the report. It is studying the report for further
action.
Transparency
International India is the Indian Chapter of Berlin based-Transparency
International, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization committed
to curbing corruption at the national level through its national
chapters, and countering corruption in international business transactions,
through systematic changes. Transparency International India (TII)
and The Oberoi Group have instituted two separate annual journalism
awards named The Rai Bahadur M.S. Oberoi Media Awards one
each for print and electronic media, for excellence in stories exposing
corruption in India.
