ESPN STAR Sports repeats telecast of the most sensational ODI ever, 8 records shattered in a matchlty'

 
‘Holi’day Special on ESPN STAR Sports

New Delhi, March 13, 2006 – In response to the thousands of requests made by the viewers, ESPN STAR Sports, Asia’s No. 1 sports broadcaster, will air three repeats of the historic ODI played between South Africa and Australia. The first repeat will be shown on ESPN at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 14. The second repeat will be on Wednesday, March 15 at 3:00 pm and the third at 9:00 pm on Sunday, March 19th.

In a sensational effort, South Africa successfully chased the highest target of 434 runs, ever set by an opponent cricket team. The first half started by the creation of a record number of runs an innings and the second half saw the record begin shattered in a span of three hours. South Africa also won the series 3-2. The ODI was a statistician delight as a plethora of world records got smashed as batsman after batsman from both the countries splashed the park with boundaries.

Making a special announcement, Sricharan Iyengar, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd, said, “We have been inundated by requests from our viewers for a repeat of the sensational ODI. Keeping the viewers interest in mind, we are making special efforts to showcase the historic match. Cricket fans will be able to see the special ODI in three special repeats.”

Chasing an almost impossible 435 for victory, also the highest-ever score in a one-day match, South Africa won by one wicket & one ball to spare. Earlier, Australia set a new world record by scoring the highest score in a one-day international, only to be broken by South Africa. Led by Captain Ricky Ponting, the Aussies scored 434 in their allotted 50 overs with the loss of just four wickets. Ponting also top scored with 164 off 105 balls, while Mike Hussey scored 80. Simon Katich pitched in with 79 & Adam Gilchrist contributed 55. For South Africa, Herschelles Gibbs top scored with his scintillating 175 off just 111 balls. Proteas Captain Gramme Smith scored an amazing 90 off just 55 balls.

The match witnessed a blitzkrieg by batsman from both sides resulting in a total of 26 sixes and 87 fours, a whopping 504 runs in 113 balls. The match saw a lot of records tumble, highest one day team total, most expensive bowling analysis, two 150s in a match and Australia losing a head to head series one day series for the first time in four years.


ESPN STAR Sports will also be airing the Test Series between the two teams Live and exclusive on its channels starting March 16
