Maruti Swift is car of the year & TVS Apache is bike of the year at CNBC-TV18 Autocar Auto Awards

Mumbai, January 12, 2006: CNBC-TV18 and Autocar India last night announced the winners of the fifth edition of the CNBC-TV18 Autocar Auto Awards at a grand ceremony in the capital – New Delhi.

Maruti Swift was adjudged the ‘Car of the Year’ among heavy weight contenders like Hyundai - Sonata Embera, Hyundai – Tucson, Ford – Fiesta, Toyota – Innova and Skoda Auto – Laura. The most prestigious of the Auto Awards, the ‘Car of the Year’ Awards put to test the latest and hottest cars in India to arrive at a car that satisfies all customer needs.

All new cars in the twelve months prior to Dec 31, 2005 were eligible for the award. With nine new bikes launched last year making the buyer's choice a tough one to make, the ‘Bike of the Year’ award helped ease the task of choosing the right bike. Leading in the pack of Bikes was TVS Apache who bagged the ‘Bike of the Year’ amongst stiff competition from Hero Honda’s – Achiever, Super Splendor, Pleasure, Bajaj Auto’s – Avenger, Wave, LML’s –CRD 100 and Kinetic’s 4S scooter.

Aiming at providing informative, entertaining and valuable information, the CNBC-TV18 Autocar Auto Awards witnessed top cars being put through the ultimate test and evaluated by a panel of experts like Dilip Chhabria, India's leading auto stylist and designer, Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor, Autocar India, Naren Kumar, National Rally Champion and Asia Pacific Rally Championship driver, Rajeev Khanna, Former Rally Champion, Shapur Kotwal, Associate Editor, Autocar India, Manvendra Singh, Auto Historian and Renuka Kirpalani, Former Rally Champion and Host, Speed Auto Show.

The CNBC-TV18 Autocar Auto Awards, ratified and validated by Ernst & Young, placed strictest adherence on the eligibility criteria, so as to minimize any scope for dilution or discrepancy in the evaluation process. The Jury ranked the contestants based on Fitness for purpose, Relevance to the Indian market, Value for money, Design and Styling, Interiors, Engine, Gearbox, Performance, Ride, Handling, brakes, Driving pleasure, Fuel efficiency and Ownership experience.

In addition to the awards ceremony in Delhi this year, CNBC-TV18 and Autocar also ran a unique nationwide contest – ‘Guess the Car of the Year’ giving an opportunity to the lucky winner to drive away with the Maruti Swift – the CNBC-TV18 Autocar Car of the Year.

Indian Multi-instrumentalist, Prem Joshua mesmerized the audience with his musical skills while the inspired Gang of Four from London's Comedy

Store: Susannah Webster, Michael Legge, John Voce and Lee Tearrells, enthralled the audience at the CNBC-TV18 Autocar Auto Awards with their unique brand of ‘improvised’ comedy. The team ingeniously improvised their sketches and routines based on audience suggestion to hilarious effect.
