16th Aug: Sports fans can look forward to a more world class sport
this weekend with Ten Sports broadcasting live coverage of the USPGA
Championship from Medinah.
The USPGA Championship is the last of the four Majors and will
take place on the longest course ever to host one of golf's four
majors. The layout at Medinah near Chicago, where the event begins
on Thursday, has been lengthened to 7,561 yards.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson joked earlier in the year after
hearing details of the new layout: "I'm thinking about coming
to the USPGA as a spectator instead of a player."
Mickelson will at least have extra time to prepare after surprisingly
missing the cut for the first time in 2006 at The International
last weekend.
Tiger Woods will go in to the tournament as favourite and Medinah
is where Tiger Woods held off Sergio Garcia to lift the USPGA title
seven years ago.
During last month's Open win at Hoylake, the world number one used
a driver just once in 72 holes, but will not be able to repeat that
tactic in Illinois.
"I think the players will notice a different golf course from
1999," said course renovator Rees Jones.
Woods and Mickelson are ranked one and two in the world respectively
and will be joined at Medinah by Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Jim
Furyk, Adam Scott and Ernie Els who are ranked three through to
seven respectively.
Chris McDonald, CEO, Taj Television Limited, owners of Ten Sports
said: The USPGA Championship is one of the biggest tournaments
in golf and this year the organisers have drawn together an extremely
strong field which will guarantee our viewers four days of exceptional
entertainment.
