Memoirs of
a Geisha tells the story of a young girl, Chiyo Sakamoto, who is sold into slavery
by her family. In 1929 an impoverished nine-year-old named Chiyo from a fishing
village is sold to a geisha house in Kyoto's Gion district and subjected to cruel
treatment from the owners and the head geisha Hatsumomo. Her stunning beauty attracts
the vindictive jealousy of Hatsumomo, until she is rescued by and taken under
the wing of Hatsumomo's bitter rival, Mameha. Under Mameha's mentorship, Chiyo
becomes the geisha named Sayuri, trained in all the artistic and social skills
a geisha must master in order to survive in her society. As a renowned geisha
she enters a society of wealth, privilege, and political intrigue. As World War
II looms Japan and the geisha's world are forever changed by the onslaught of

of a Geisha is a 2005 film adaptation of the novel of the same name, produced
by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and Spyglass Entertainment and by Douglas
Wick's Red Wagon Productions. It was directed by Rob Marshall. It was released
in the United States on December 9, 2005 by Columbia Pictures and DreamWorks.
It stars Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Youki Kudoh, and Suzuka
Ohgo. Ohgo plays the younger Sayuri in the movie, which was filmed in southern
and northern California and in several locations in Kyoto, including the Kiyomizu
temple and the Fushimi Inari shrine. The
film was nominated and won numerous awards, including nominations for six Academy
Awards, and eventually won three: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and
Best Costume Design. It had Won 3 Oscars, another 17 wins & 28 nominations. The
Japanese release of the film was titled "Sayuri", based on the main
character that was renamed as Sayuri in the movie. |
