Serials
with social message
Veteran
scriptwriter Dr Achla Nagar brought in a more conservative note to the
workshop when she said that soaps and serials need not pander to western
tastes by showing scenes, which do not cater to Indian sensibilities.
A
scriptwriter with a vast radio, film and TV background, Dr Nagar spoke
on the necessity of respecting Indian sensibilities while scripting
serials for an Indian audience. "One has to experience emotions oneself
in order to convey them to viewers", she said, adding that writers should
keep their eyes open to changes in society and adapt themselves constantly.
"Mumbai is not the whole of India", she pointed out, maintaining that
writers should write for the vast multitudes who live in small towns
and villages too.
One
has to remember that India remains a one TV household and that families
still watch television together, she said. Serials need to portray values
that reflect current Indian values, Dr Nagar added.
