Reality
and music channels definitely go hand in hand in the country. The
biggest indicator of the fact is the success story of [V] Popstars.
Star India's music arm pulled all stops to make sure that its glam-reality
show [V] Popstars, marketed as the "talent search of
epic proportions spanning the country", managed to take Channel
[V] to the top of the music heap. Popstars helped [V] recreate
the triumph of the reality series that had earlier struck a chord
with viewers in UK, Australia and Canada.
The
channel roped in an impressive jury comprising singer Shubha Mudgal,
designer Manish Malhotra and composer Sandeep Chowta and [V] presenter
Sushma Reddy. The six-month long drama, beginning December 2001,
with
a catchphrase Kiska Band Bajega, created stars out of five
girls next door Pratichee Mohapatra, Neha Bhasin, Mahua Kamat, Anushka
Manchanda and Seema Ramchandani aka Viva. Encouraged by its success,
the channel embarked on the second Popstars hunt, this time a mixed
band.
The
TAM data for six metros, rating results for SEC ABC 15-34 C&S
homes in July 2003 indicates that the channel emerged as a clear
cut winner during the weeks Popstars was aired. Certainly
a moment to rejoice, as according to the channel newsletter almost
5.8 viewers tuned in to witness launch.
