VSNL ANNOUNCES HUGE INVESTMENT FOR UPLINKING

The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, the nodal government organization for up linking from Indian shores, says it will invest Rs 2.75 billion in improving its broadcasting infrastructure in the next couple of years. The firm has 17 dish antenna in 10 earth stations all over India directed at Intelsat satellites. This will be increased to 25 by end this year. It said it has leased enough capacity to up link up to 18 channels from its gateways or from broadcasters' premises.

So far, only the southern language Sun Network consisting of Sun TV, Udaya TV, Surya TV, Gemini TV, and Gemini TV has started up linking from Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu to Intelsat satellites which are being marketed by VSNL. But VSNL acting chairman & managing director Amitabh Kumar says that the Intelsat satellites are emerging as "hotbirds" over India.
