SCIENTIFIC ATLANTA TARGETS SATELLITE
TELEVISION SEGMENT
US firm Scientific Atlanta (SA) is currently
in discussions with Indian companies to find a partner for
the satellite TV network division it recently set up in
India. SA already has a presence in India in the shape of
broadband equipment and satellite equipment units and has
local partners working with it. The broadband division offers
a range of cable TV equipment to cable TV networks in India
while the latter caters to the V-Sat business. SA has installed
close to 1,000 V-Sats in India so far. The broadband equipment
unit has not done as well.
The new satellite TV network division will target broadcasters
and uplinking providers wanting to offer services in India.
Recently, the government has allowed Indian companies to
uplink from Indian shores and SA wants to tap the business
segment with its range of full motion antennas and gateways
for teleports. Currently, the government-owned VSNL is the
sole uplink provider in the country.
