CYCLONE TOLL MOUNTS;
FORMER PAKISTAN PM IN DANGER
The past week was marked by the rising
toll of human lives courtesy the cyclone that raged
through the east Indian State of Orissa. The casualties
continued to mount even as relief measures were lacking.
The Central government swung into action it is said
a mite too late after international organisations raised
a hue and cry about the government's apathy. The number
of those who perished in the cyclone could be anywhere
upwards of 10,000 and could touch 25,000 according to
some estimates.
The BJP meanwhile has drawn up a strategy
to change the perception that it is anti-Christian.
Its anti-Christian image has come courtesy the attacks
on Christians and even the killing of some Christians
over the past year and a half. The first step in correcting
this perception was the visit of the Pope in India,
though it was marred by minor protests. Several other
initiatives are also likely to be drawn up.
India has also come to the support of
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sahrif when it stood by
the Commonwealth's decision that he was still the Pakistan
PM. Reports are that Sharif is likely to stand trial
and charges have been cooked up against him which if
proved are punishable by death. Sharif's wherabouts
have been unknown ever since General Pervez Musharraf
toppled him in a military coup.
