ZEE PREMIERE GETS FAVOURABLE COURT VERDICT
A Calcutta high court has come out in favour
of Zee TV in its dispute with French publisher Hachette
Filipacchi over the title of film magazine Zee Premiere.
Earlier, the Court had issued an ex-parte
order against Zee TV telling it to cease publication of
Zee Premiere when the French company had claimed that it
ha the rights to the title Premiere as it already publishes
a magazine under that name in several countries. But Zee
replied that it had got the title registered in India under
the Press Act. It also argued that newspapers and magazines
the world over have common titles and if Zee was prohibited
from using the Premiere title several other Indian publications
such as The Telegraph, The Statesman and Pioneer would have
to shut down. The judge who had earlier issued the ex-parte
order vacated it and has asked the two parties to appear
before the court on 27 February.
Zee Premiere is sold in several markets
worldwide and it can also be read on the Internet on its
web-site.
