BANGALORE: Reliance Retail (RR) announced the launch of pilot 'Reliance Fresh' stores with areas ranging fro 1600 sq ft to 3200 sq. ft across 11 locations in Bangalore today.

The stores will begin operations starting tomorrow. RRL has already opened 80 stores over 190,000 square feet in Andhra Pradesh, Jaipur, Chennai, Delhi NCR and Ranchi.

The stores that will open tomorrow will cater to food items only, a major portion of which will be occupied by fresh fruits, vegetables and staples. Other FMCG products will be limited to food items only such as dairy products, top up grocery items and 'Reliance Select' items, the Reliance brand of products. No plans are on currently to formally launch and promote the Reliance Select brand currently. At present only staples will be sold under this brand, though Reliance is looking at including other products, including bakery items and bread in the future, according to RRL president and chief executive-(foods business) Gunender Kapur.

RRL plans to open stores of different formats including supermarkets and hypermarts as well as stores ranging in area from 2500 to 10,000 sq ft., to cater to the needs of all segments of society.

Kapur says that RRL wants each store to cater to around 3,000 families/customers within as distance of 2 kms from each outlet. Since the $ 300 billion per annum retail business in India is growing at a very healthy pace, RRL's target of Rs 250 billion over the next five years will not really displace the small retail grocery outlets and other chains, claims Kapur. Kapur is looking to have a lot more stores in Bangalore. Mysore, Hubli and Managlore are among the other locations that RRL plans to launch their stores next in Karnataka.

RRL had taken over the Sahakari Bhandar chain in Mumbai, but Kapur does not expect to replicate this Mumbai specific unique strategy in other cities in India.

At present marketing and promotional activities have been limited to printed handouts and mailers according to Reliance Industries - Retail Business Sr. vp (Head Corporate Communications and Corporate Affairs) Manu Kapoor. So far the creative work has been done by internal sources at Reliance. A well planned mass media communications campaign including TVC's will roll out somewhere in November this year when a lot more outlets have been opened said Manu. The budgets will be substantial and in line with the media and promo spends of the Reliance group Manu averred.
