IRS 2007 Round 1: Readership figures drop

MUMBAI: MRUC has announced the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) Round 1 data for 2007 today.The survey was conducted for the period January to December 2006.Many of the top publications in various genres continue to hold their places although there is a distinct drop in readership, a worrying trend even internationally.

The Top 10 English dailies see Times of India leading with 6781000 readership followed by Hindustan Times at 3331000 and Hindu at 2209000 readership numbers. Deccan Chronicle and Telegraph occupy the fourth and fifth position respectively.

In the Top 10 publications genre it is the regional publications that rule with Dainik Jagran leading the list with a readership of 17114000 followed by Dainik Bhaskar at 12514000 readership numbers, Hindustan (9052000) and Malayala Manorama (8837000). Daily Thanthi occupies the fifth position.

The Top 10 Hindi dailies genre is led by Dainik Jagran (17114000) followed by Dainik Bhaskar(12514000), Hindustan, Amar Ujala and Rajasthan Patrika.

The Top 10 regional dailies sees Malayala Manorama hold on to its leading position with 8837000 readership followed by Daily Thanthi, Eeanadu and Mathrubhumi. The
Readership figures show a healthy readership amongst regional dailies specific to the south. Marathi daily, Lokmat occupies fifth position with a readership of 6874000.

The Top 10 magazines genre is led by two fortnightlies - Hindi magazine Saras Salil with a readership of 4760000 and Malayalam magazine Vanitha at 3067000. English monthly India Today occupies third position with a readership of 2786000.

In the channels watched last week category, DD 1 National Network leads by a huge margin of 21,4691,000 viewership followed by Hindi GEC Star Plus at 73324000 and Hindi news channel Aaj Tak at 58370000 viewership numbers. DD News and Zee Cinema occupy the fourth and fifth position respectively. The other channels that make up the top 10 include: Sun TV, Zee TV, Gemini TV, Sony TV and ETV.
