NEW DELHI: MelCole Public Relations is handling the media relations for the `advanced press team’ accompanying the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch, which will be showcased in the capital on Thursday. The flame arrives here on the day of the event.

The Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay event will be flagged from Qutub Minar and will end at the National stadium in the evening. The torch will be traveling through 33 cities across the world before reaching Athens, where the 2004 Olympics are to begin in August.

Says MelCole PR executive director Rohit Srivastava, “We got into the picture through our global affiliation with Ketchum, which is handling the promotion of the event globally. While the direct media relations for the propagation of the event is being handled by the Delhi government, we will work on spreading the awareness about the torch. Besides this, we also have been involved in the content creation of two press conferences conducted by the government.”

The MelCole team localised the template from overseas and also added content, which was presented to media during the two conferences (the second one was held last week). The conferences have been held for announcing the celebrities for the event and the route to be undertaken on 10 June.

On advanced press team, Srivastava said, “Apart from the conferences, our main focus is on getting Olympic message – peace and friendship across the public. The advanced press team, which is accompanying the flame, will be interacting with media and sharing information on the torch itself – how flames perpetually ignited in terms of technology used, the metal used for torch etc.”

While one member from the advanced press team has already arrived, three will be accompanying the flame.

Srivastava is reporting to Ketchum vice-president for the region Kerrin Roberts, who is overseeing the event from where it started (Sydney earlier this month). Overall, Roberts would be involved in Australia, Japan, Korea and India. From New Delhi, the flame will move to Cairo.
