MUMBAI: "If you want to bring the fun back in the process, throw the bloody MBAs out!" Well, that's what O&M chairman and national creative director Piyush Pandey had to say on the second and concluding day of the Promax & BDA conference held in Mumbai in the session titled 'Creative Thinking: Putting the fun back into the process.'

Pandey went on to quote what his ex-ex managing director Mani Iyer often used to say -- "Take your work seriously but never take yourself seriously."

Emphasising on the point that in the business of entertainment the last thing one can do is get serious Pandey said, "Imagine the animators who are working for the Walt Disney Company. What can they do in a tight economy and what would happen if those animators were serious? So the fact of the matter remains that passion and process can never be put in the same paragraph ever."

Pandey went on to say that a few years back the Walt Disney Company wanted him and his brother Prasoon Pandey to help them adapt Aladdin in Hindi and that was the most fun time that they had. "Teamwork should be made fun and the question we should address to ourselves should be that can we create a world in our own organisation which allows people to express themselves and that is where the challenge lies."

Pandey showed a video on the making of Aladdin to buttress the point. The question Pandey asked ad men to address is how does one go about bringing the fun element in work? In O&M I don't tell my people that this is the way I have been creating work since the last 10 years and I want them to do the same. "I leave them on their own and the fact of the matter is that till date I haven't got any ideas for an ad while I was sitting in my office. Ideas have always come to me when I'm out relaxing with my friends and having a good time."

Pandey went to show some recent ads that O&M had created for brands like Alpeine Liebe, Center Shock, Sidhee Cement, Pfizer, Pidilite, Close Up, Cadburys, Cancer Patients Aids Association and The Times of India.

Pandey concluded on the note that one should use their heads, have a lot of fun and do what has not been done earlier. "The onus is largely with the people who create and not the organisation."
