MUMBAI: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on soft drinks has upheld findings of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). It concurred that the 12 branded products of Pepsi and Coca-Cola the CSE had examined did contain pesticide residues. The JPC has now asked the government to formulate stringent quality norms for carbonated drinks..

A report by Prannoy Roy's NDTV added that the JPC made it clear that the levels were not as much as claimed by the CSE. The JPC is also reported to have added a cautionary note, saying that the CSE should have got its results validated by an accredited laboratory.

The 300-page report in three volumes was made after hearings spanning over five months. JPC members had deliberated on the matter after having met representatives of the two beverage conglomerates and the officials of the Health Ministry earlier this month. The JPC had a meeting on the Cola controversy back in September.
