Jubilant 50: Ad Club comes of age

MUMBAI: With Anil Ambani gracing the occasion, the Ad Club's 50th anniversary celebration was one that was conducted with pomp and finesse. With the who's who of the advertising fraternity in attendance, the event marked a true spirit of happiness and jubilation.

 

 

The much acclaimed Gerson D'Cunha was the official VJ of the event, and kick-started the event by an interesting video clip, taking the audience through five decades of advertising nostalgia. True to his style, he ended with a punch saying, "I look forward to our next celebration. 75 years can be fun."

Followed by an outstanding performance by international maestro Trilok Gurthu, the jazz percussionist; the audience sampled divine symphony. Gurthu also managed to engage the listeners in heavy interactive beats ensuring a smile on everybody's face.

President of the Advertising Club, Bombay M G Parameswaran then took over highlighting the achievements as well as the road to be taken in the coming years. A solemn pledge was made to set up a cause committee to take on social issues. Another issue that came up was the relocation of the Ad Club to a larger premises for the purpose of ensuring that the Club became the adverting hub of the city.

The Advertising Club initiatives, '50 careers in Advertising' written by Anita Sharan as well as the special issue of Solus by Bhaskar Das were unveiled at the event.

The 'Advertising for Advertising' contest applauded the FCB Ulka team as numero uno and O&M as runner up.

 

 

What truly marked the night with a difference was the Anil Ambani's inspirational sermon to the advertising gurus, which started off in an extremely off beat manner and questioned every aspect of advertising in India. Ambani says, "A full 57 years after we woke up to freedom, our advertising world remains under bondage." Making references to Dhirubhai Ambani, Azeem Premji and Narayan Murthy not waiting for 'Brand India' to place their companies on the global map, he emphasised the lack of pioneers in the ad arena.

Although the buzz after his speech was, "How did he manage to learn by heart such a well articulated lecture?"

Ending on a light note he says, "I am jogging 100 km every week in the hope of being invited for another righteous sermon like this one to mark the Ad Club's progression to next the 'metal'."

With music blasting, spirits flowing and feet tapping, the Ad Club Mumbai's 50th truly was a celebration well celebrated.
