MUMBAI: Conviction of Boris Becker for tax evasion has led Siyaram
Silk Mills Ltd to review its one-year contract with the tennis icon.
However, after an admission by the tennis star that he made a
mistake by failing to pay taxes worth some three million dollars, the
German court spared him jail and gave a two-year suspended sentence
and fine instead .
The Siyaram Silk Mills, the flagship company of the Rs 1,000-crore
Siyaram Poddar Group, had entered into a contract with Becker in
August after which advertisements of the tennis star, along with
Bollywood actress Diya Mirza, began to be aired across all television
channels.
''We are currently adopting a wait-and-watch policy and will arrive
at a final decision only after the top management studies the reports
and the impact, if at all negative, it can have on our brand,''
Siyamram Silk Mills General Manager (Marketing) N Gangadhar is quoted
as saying in a report by United News of India.
''We had signed Becker because we thought his international image
and energetic personality matched the quality of our brand. Initially
we started with a 90-second ad for the first 15 days, the duration
of which has now been reduced to below 30 seconds,'' he added.
The report further states that the company has stated that it would
study the reports of Becker's conviction before arriving at a final
decision.
