• BBC ties up with Fremantle to develop kids content

    MUMBAI: BBC Children?s and television format creator and distributor FremantleMedia Enterprises? (FME) Kids and Family Entertainment division have signed a long-term deal that will see them develop and produce a continuous sequence of new programmes designed to entertain and appeal to children of all ages.

    The deal will see FME and BBC Children?s co-developing, co-producing and co-funding a number of new children?s shows over the course of the next five years, and investing tens of millions of pounds in order to fulfill the production requirements of the agreement.

    The partnership brings together two players in the kids and family entertainment space in a dedicated effort to delight and inspire children in the UK and the world over.

    The announcement of a strengthened and committed relationship between BBC Children?s and FME?s Kids and Family Entertainment is designed to result in the continuous creation of new programming for children.

    Within the parameters of this new partnership, BBC Children?s and FME?s Kids and Family Entertainment will collaborate to create programmes for both CBBC and CBeebies.

    CBBC focusses on children aged 6-12 years old and CBeebies is geared towards younger children under the age of six. Under the terms of the partnership, the BBC Children?s in-house production teams will produce the shows in conjunction with the FME Kids & Family team including Sander Schwartz, president, and Bob Higgins, executive vice president.

    BBC Children?s director Joe Godwin said, "We?re delighted to be signing this new deal with FremantleMedia Enterprises and look forward to building on the success we?ve already had working together on top-rated programmes such as Tree Fu Tom. This groundbreaking partnership will allow us to create and develop even more exciting new shows that will entertain and inspire kids throughout the UK."

    This partnership does not affect the first-look deal that BBC Children?s has with BBC Worldwide who continue to invest in children?s programming and also operate the CBeebies international channels. And BBC Children?s will continue to collaborate with a wide range of creative partners, broadcasters, distributors and indies (who currently produce 70 per cent of the BBC?s children?s programmes).

    An immediate benefit stemming from this new partnership is the commissioning of further explorations in the enchanted kingdom of ?Treetopolis?, with the second season of ?Tree Fu Tom?. Allowing each viewer to become a superhero within this miniature fantasy world, ?Tree Fu Tom? was developed to aid children who have movement disorders and difficulties such as Dyspraxia. Continued seasons of the show are certain to both inspire and entertain pre-schoolers.

    Extending beyond television screens, the deal will also see FME representing global ancillary rights, including merchandise, home entertainment, live events, publishing, worldwide distribution, and more. The BBC will retain television rights for the UK and Eire, as well as certain other rights within those countries.

  • HBO Nordic acquires content from Fremantle

    MUMBAI: FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the commercial and brand extension arm of television format creator and distributor FremantleMedia, has become a launch supplier to HBO Nordic, the pan-regional channel launched last week in Stockholm, inking a deal that will see some of FME titles in drama, comedy and factual finding audiences across Scandinavia. 

    Sales include drama ?Hit and Miss?, comedy ?Web Therapy? and two factual titles from Morgan Spurlock. In ?A Day in the Life? Spurlock uses his trademark wit and humour to give an insight into 16 very different lives including Sir Richard Branson and Will.I.Am; ?New Brittania? takes a comedy sideswipe at the behaviours and institutions which make Britain so?British.

    FME senior VP sales for UK, Eire and Scandinavia Justin Hatfield said, "The new HBO channel is a great addition to the Nordic media landscape and our shows will have great appeal to audiences in the region. From the darkly compelling Hit and Miss to the distinct comedy of Lisa Kudrow, and Morgan Spurlock?s unique approach to factual storytelling, we?re looking forward to seeing the success of these titles on HBO Nordic."

    The FME catalogue spans thousands of hours of drama, comedy, factual and kids and family titles available to broadcasters around the world.

  • Fremantle in deal with Random House for Robert Irwin series

    MUMBAI: FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) has entered into a new publishing deal with Random House Australia to publish a series of eight fiction books and one non-fiction title with Robert Irwin.

    Set to release in March 2013, the series, to be called Robert Irwin: Dinosaur Hunter, will follow a journey of discovery and education about eight-year-old Robert?s greatest passion, following very much in his father?s footsteps of fun animal education.

    Designed to take readers aged five to eight on Robert?s own quest for new facts and interesting trivia about dinosaurs, the 96-page fiction books will be illustrated throughout, with a special fact file section at the end, showcasing real life information about the dinosaurs featured in each book.

    A special bumper non-fiction book completes the series with a particular focus on recent dinosaur discoveries the world over.

    FME holds a global partnership agreement with Australia Zoo and the Irwin family to develop new worldwide opportunities for television and licensing.

    FME Vice President Consumer Products Hannah Laird said: "Robert?s books are set to be a new dinosaur sensation and we are very excited to work on such an exciting project with Robert, the Irwins and Australia Zoo, and Random House.?

    Random House Business Development Director Julie Burland said: ?We are thrilled to continue our relationship with the Irwin family, having had a very successful three years working with Bindi. Robert Irwin, Dinosaur Hunter is bound to be on every young Australian boy?s radar in early 2013.?

    Robert Irwin: Dinosaur Hunter is expected to be the first in a number of licensing arrangements for Robert as he matures into a young advocate for education, discovery and animal awareness, as his sister Bindi has already become.

    The books will be sold in all good bookstores and department stores, with all sales and marketing managed by the publisher, Random House Australia.
