MUMBAI: "News is how you define it; we define it broadly as news and information. We?re expanding the audience that is watching CNN. In order to be successful, we need to bring new viewers." These remarks were made by news broadcaster CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker this week at the AllThingsD conference.

He noted that CNN is held to a higher standard. He also feels that CNN needs to focus more on content that one normally finds on channels like Discovery. This way new viewers will come in and he gave the example of ?Anthony Bourdain?s Parts Unknown? to make his point.

He said that Fox News and MSNBC have become political news channels, not news in general. And other channels are so focused on Washington and politics that they haven?t covered the many big non-political news events well over the past two months, which is why CNN has gained audience in that period. "While they are covering events in Washington from a political point of view that leaves the news for us to cover. That doesn?t mean we can?t cover politics, but politics is just one part of the news. We are covering politics and much more, and I think that is the opening for us."

He also defended the news broadcaster from charges that it did not correct its report on the boston Marathon bombings soon enough. "We made a mistake in Boston where we reported there had been an arrest. In fact, we corrected that mistake with 45 minutes," Zucker added.

MUMBAI: CNN talk show host Piers Morgan is writing a book that he says will give a "warts and all" account of life at the news broadcaster.

The book ?Shooting Straight: Guns, Gays, God, and George Clooney? will be released later this year.

Gallery Books VP, publisher Jennifer Bergstrom said, "Piers Morgan is honest, forthcoming and fearless. I fully expect Shooting Straight to enlighten some readers and enrage others. Either way, it will be a thought-provoking book that I?m thrilled to publish it."

Morgan said, ?There are few jobs more varied, dramatic, or exciting than anchoring a nightly cable news show, so I decided to record it, warts and all, in real time. Readers will go on the same journey I did ? a pulsating, entertaining, terrifying, emotional and occasionally disastrous roller-coaster. This is ?The Newsroom? on steroids.?

MUMBAI: Under a new chief Jeff Zucker US news broadcaster CNN is trying to make itself more competitive. But it still has a few years to go before it can beat Fox News.

Speaking to a few reporters gathered around him at the Landmarc restaurant in Time Warner Center Zucker answering the question of when the broadcaster would beat Fox News and be the number one news channel he said, "Come back to me in three years. We have miles and miles to go. Fox is not only incredibly strong, they are incredibly dominant. It?s going to take a long time."

In terms of the plan for CNN he said, "What I want CNN to be is to be aggressive in news, coupled with programming like Anthony Bourdain."

"We need a number of programmes that you would not normally find on cable news networks but on places like Discovery, A&E, Nat Geo, we want to compete in that arena as well as the traditional cable news arena that CNN has traditionally been grouped into," he concluded.
