She
is a pint size girl wonder, all of 22 years! A fierce Leo born
on 8 August , Komila Jagtiani (aka Kim) has been a Channel [V]
VJ as well as a model and dancer .
VJ Kim's first claim to fame was at the Miss India Canada pageant
in 1998. The Theatre Dance Academy of Canada alumni was chosen
as the first runner-up fin the pageant besides she also won the
Miss Photogenic award that year, but like a true blue Leo she
did participate in the contest again in 1999. This time she took
home the winner's title.
After that Kim put her academic aims on hold to pursue psychology
and law and to don a new avtaar - that of a Channel [V] anchor
-presenter. She has been the anchor for Club [V], Jumpstart,
Very [V] and PO[V]. Presently on the screen you can
see her battling (literally) with VJ Yudi,, for a request show.
In a recent avatar, Kim is charming theater goers by her
chamber maid 'Reena' act in My best friends wedding, a
comedy drama by Sundeep Sikaand's Masquerades group.
In a interview at Sun and Sand's - a suburban hotel at Juhu Mumbai
, she spoke to Indiantelevision.com's Trupti Ghag.
Excerpts of the tete-e-tete-

Did being a veejay seem like a natural progression after being
Canada Miss India?
It does seem like that now; but believe me, it was the farthest
thing in my mind at that point of time. I did not even know what
veejay meant; in Canada we call a veejay an anchor-presenter.
Since I won tickets to India, I came here for a few weeks on
vacation. Channel [V] called me for an audition apparently after
somebody had spoken about me, till date I do not know who recommended
me.
|
| |
|
How was the audition like? Why do you think that you got selected?
Honestly, I think I was awful. I distinctly remember my audition
at Channel [V]'s Khar office. I was due to return to Canada in
a weeks time and I impulsively decided to reach there. And all
I ever did was just talk in front of the camera.
I think it was because of my dialect and my peculiar looks. All
the anchor-presenters at Channel [V] are chosen because they are
unique in appearance.
|
| |
|
You were launched as a sexy anchor person. How much do you
identify with the image portrayed?
Oh the fishnet stocking and the feather look! Truly speaking,
the people at Channel [V] weren't sure where to put me. I wasn't
cute as a button neither did I have a sexy image. So they decided
that I should sport both looks till the time they could fit me.
I started off doing six shows for the channel - while I was the
girl next door in a request show; I had a hot image in another.
Now I am doing just three shows; thankfully, I am neither. I am
just being myself.

When and why did you plan to make
a foray in the theatre?
Dancing and performing is my passion. It was my dream to be
a Broadway performer. When Sundeep Sikaand, the director of My
best friend's wedding, asked me to audition for the 'Reena's'
role I could not refuse. What really clicked was the way my character
was portrayed. She is so loud and so dramatic. Nothing about her
is muted yet her presence is not jarring. It is an extremely hilarious
play.
The whole theatre experience is exhilarating, there is a unity about
it. Though it is time consuming, it is creatively satisfying. |
| |
|
What kind of training went into essaying the role?
I never took up any acting classes but Sandy put us through
loads of rehearsal. There were a lot of reading sessions to make
us comfortable with the character. Surprisingly I was quite comfortable,
working with channel [V] made me a lot more confident. Performing
for theatre requires good voice modulation skills and after [V]
that wasn't such a task after all.
Sundeep is good director, he asked us to interpret the character.
We pretty much did our own gig, he did butt in but only when he
thought that we were off the track. And since after all the reading,
we had an idea as to how he wanted us to enact the role it wasn't
much of a tussle.

You were signed by Channel [V] prior to it being wholly a
Star subsidiary. Are there any major difference in the company
now since the time you joined?
Things are more organised now. It used to be chaotic earlier;
now we have a working system in place. Everything is planned.
There is a precision in everything even the colour of my outfit
and my make up being chalked out in detail. They make sure that
you are able to perform better.
|
| |
|
But hasn't Channel [V] completely changed its identity?
I absolutely agree with what you say. It used to be a total
English music channel with a totally different programming strategy.
But now it is 80 per cent Hindi music and 20 per cent English.
But that is exactly what the audience demands.
Popstar's and other shows were such a great hit. The
channel has donned the total entertainer garb. Anyway it seems
suicidal to go against the grain.

"Performing an abnormal
character is great challenge"
|
 |
|
| |
|
What is the role that you are dreaming to do?
Hmm.. I think that of the advocates wife in Devils Advocate,
especially the scene where she is tormented the devil. I am sort
of fascinated with paranormal activities.
I would also love to essay Urmila Matonkar's obsessed lover act
in Pyar tune kya kiya. She was just phenomenal.
In my opinion, performing an abnormal character is a great challenge.
You do not have any reference point, you have to rely a lot on
your imagination.
|
| |
|
Does that have anything to do with you wanting to study
psychology?
Bingo, I think that's it. I am looking for opportunities to
experiment and to learn more.

"Seriously
speaking, I wanted to do an adventure based show and Yudi
got to do it with Panga. I am basically an adventure
freak" |
|
| |
You are going to be around as the Channel [V]
veejay aren't you? What is it that as a veejay you are looking forward
to do?
I want Yudi's job! Seriously speaking, I wanted to do an adventure
based show and Yudi got to do it with Panga. I am basically
an adventure freak. |
| |
|
What do you do to unwind after a long day?
Sometimes I watch TV, but only music channels, adventure channels
or English movie channels. I am still weak with my Hindi. I read
sometimes too.
|
| |
|
What book you would (or won't) lend?
The book that I am currently reading Douglas Adam's Hitchhikers
guide to the galaxy. I am actually reading the second part,
it is an absolutely brilliant literary piece.
|
| |
Are there any Bollywood forays on the cards?
My Hindi is absolutely ghastly, so that is out for the time
being. (Smiles) If you are talking about dance appearances, I still
have to think about it. |
