Synopsis: How could anyone not love a guy like Raymond?
As the head of a chaotic household of the Nineties, he makes
a heroic effort to please the messiest pair of twin year-old
sons ever horn, a precocious 5-year-old daughter, a wife who
is likely to crack at any moment under the pressures of full-time
parenting, and an intrusive mother, father and brother who
spend most of their lives invading the privacy of Ray's home.
What's more, Ray handles this all with a wickedly funny sense
of humour.
A sports columnist in his mid-30s, Raymond works very hard
at trying to achieve some semblance of domestic tranquillity
in his Queens, New York home. It's no easy task, though. The
twins, Gregory and Matthew, are up to their teething rings
in trouble, and daughter Ally is trying out her growing vocabulary
of choice insults on strangers. Slowly being driven crazy
from all this household turmoil is Ray's knockout wife, Debra.
She is dying for a night off from the kids - but most of all
she'd like a break from Ray's meddlesome parents.
Ray's mother, Marie, a well-meaning 60-year-old busybody,
harasses Ray and Debra with constant, unannounced visits and
unsolicited advice on everything from child rearing to Ray's
favourite brand of soap. Her endearingly wacky husband, Frank
(acclaimed actor Peter Boyle), delights in such pranks as
retrieving Ray and Marie's personal answering-machine messages.
At 40, Ray's brother Robert still lives at home with his parents,
where he nurtures such "idiosyncrasies" as touching food to
his chin before he cats it - a habit he's teaching his nephews
and niece. While Debra tries to keep Ray's family at a safe
and comfortable distance from her house, they cleverly contrive
more excuses for just "dropping by".
The conflict between Debra and her in-laws as they compete
for Raymond's attention triggers the show's quick-fire humour.
And reacting to it all with wit, charm and a dash of dishonesty
is the ever-loveable Raymond. A faithful husband, doting father
and dutiful son, he does his best to keep everyone happy.
