NEW DELHI: Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (Tdsat) member JS Sarma will be the next chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

A senior Trai official said that Sarma’s name has been cleared as the next chairman of Trai.

Sarma will take charge after completing a few cases in Tdsat. He will take over from acting chairman AK Sawhney.

Indiantelevision.com had earlier reported that Sarma was likely to be the next Trai chairman.

Sawhney took charge from former chairman Nripendra Misra, who retired on 22 March 2009 after a three-year tenure.

Sarma was appointed a member of Tdsat on 28 July 2008. He had earlier worked as secretary Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and chairman Telecom Commission from June 2005 to July 2006.

Sarma was also appointed as secretary of Department of Fertilisers.
