MUMBAI: Regal Entertainment group, which operates 6,763 theatre screens in US, has announced a tie up with Sony Corporation, the electronic giant headquartered in San Diego, for the installation of 4K digital projectors across all the Regal theatres for next three to five years.

Sony's 4K systems produce high levels of resolution, contrast and overall image quality. "The rollout of Sony 4K systems gives Regal the opportunity to utilise the technology to provide patrons the best available presentation," said Regal Entertainment group incoming CEO Amy Miles.

The agreement is part of an initiative being led by Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP). DCIP is charged with planning and implementing the deployment of digital cinema.

Around 1500 screens will also be outfitted for 3D digital projection by using Sony's newly introduced dual-lens adaptor technology.

Sony Electronics' VP and head of digital cinema business Gary Johns says, "The innovative design and capabilities of the 4K projectors' are a perfect fit for supporting their commitment to deliver not only the quality 2D and 3D digital projection, but also alternative content, live theatrical events and more."

4K technology provides image resolution four times greater than 2K projection systems and four times greater than high-definition.
