NEW DELHI: With the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman Nripendra Misra retiring on 22 March, member-Finance AK Sawhney will take charge till the government appoints a new chairman, process for which is on.

Speaking to indiantelevision.com, Misra said, “Sawhney is the senior most member of Trai and will head it till the government appoints a new chairman.

So how does Misra feel at the end of his three-year innings as chairman? "It was very satisfying as all the regulations issued by the Authority always focused on the consumer. Even the last regulation released on 20 March is on revamping the quality of service standards of basic telephony and mobile phone. It is meant to provide consumers with a better service."

Meanwhile, the screening committee has shortlisted 13 candidates for the post of Trai chairman. Set up to scrutinise the applications, the committee has rejected 16 of them on grounds of being non-eligible.

In addition to telecom, Trai is also the regulatory authority for broadcast including both television and radio.
