| MUMBAI:
Looks like the controversial reality TV show Sach Ka Saamna will have its
free run on Star Plus. The Delhi High Court does not want to play the moral policing
role. The Court's message: If viewers don't want to watch the show, they can simply
switch off their TV. Dismissing two petitions seeking a stay on Sach
Ka Saamna, a division bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah suggested the
petitioners to approach the central government over it. "It
is for the government to decide whether the programme should be banned or not.
It is not the function of the Court ... There are far more serious problems in
this country which we have to settle," the bench said. Petitioners
Deepak Maini and Prabhat Kumar had said the show - on which contestants are asked
personal questions - was "obscene" and went against the values of the
Indian society. Dismissing
the separate petitions, the Court said, "Our culture is not so fragile that
it would be affected by one TV programme. You are asking us to entertain an area
which deals with perceptions and opinions. Further, morality yardsticks are to
be decided by the government. We cannot decide the issue." The
Information and Broadcasting Ministry had issued a show-cause notice to Star Plus
following a furore in Parliament over Sach Ka Saamna's controversial content. |
