BSNL to use Redback technology for 5 mn broadband subscribers

MUMBAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to use Redback Networks technology, an Ericsson company providing video-centric routers for major triple-play networks, for supporting five million broadband subscribers.

BSNL currently uses Redback's SmartEdge 800 multi-service edge routers to support 2.5 million broadband subscribers. Under the expansion, BSNL plans to set up additional Redback SmartEdge 800 multi-service edge routers to support up to 2.5 million more subscribers across India.

 

Redback Networks VP - sales and operations in Asia Herve Brunet said, "India continues to be one of the largest growth opportunities for Redback in greater Asia. Redback and Ericsson are dedicated to helping BSNL build a full service broadband network that will provide the highest quality data, voice and video services to subscribers across this region."

 
BSNL is the seventh largest telecommunications company in world with more than 70 million wire-line and wireless subscribers. BSNL generated more than $8 billion in revenues last year and reported more than $2.26 billion in net income.
