DELHI: The government will shortly announce the names of the members
of a proposed "Standing Media Consultative Committee"
in order to curb cases of overplay and hyperactivity in the
media. The committee will be headed by information & broadcasting
ministry (MIB) secretary Sushma Singh.
Minister
of State for I&B and External Affairs Anand Sharma told
newspersons that the committee will have members from the
Editors Guild, the News Broadcasters Association and other
media bodies.
The
Committee was expected to be set up within the next few days,
the Minister indicated on the sidelines on a press meet about
Prasar Bharati.
He
said the government wanted the committee to act as a bridge
between the government and the civil society.
While
denying that this would mean curbing the freedom of the press,
he said the role of the committee would be to oversee coverage
of important events during emergencies and contingencies.
