MUMBAI: He was rated as amongst the most gifted comedy writers in the United Kingdom. But death had the last laugh when a streptococcal infection took away Sharat Sardana's life on 27 January. Sardana who penned comedies such as Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at No 42, Going for English (along with his writing partner Richard Pinto) was just 40 when he breathed his last.

The comedies he penned were aired by BBC and were humorous and slapstick sketches of BritAsian culture. The shows that he penned were among the first BritAsian shows to break into the main stream culture. They got recognition too in the form of Bafta nominations for Goodness Gracious Me and for The Kumars at Number 42 which pocketed an International Emmy in 2006.

At the time of his death, reports say he was penning a series that he hoped would become the male counterpart of Sex and The City.

His funeral is slated for 4 February in England.
