| MUMBAI:Will
media baron Subhash Chandra's Indian Cricket League (ICL) finally get the International
Cricket Council (ICC) stamp? Punters will find out which direction things will
move by 1 February late evening. The
ICC board is slated to gather in Perth on 31 January and 1 February for the first
of the four meetings it holds in a year.
Among
other things the board will discuss ICLs application
to be officially recognised. So far, the swing has been against
ICL being given any recognition and it has been considered
a rebel league with IPL commissioner Lalit Modi being its
main opponent. The BCCI - the Indian cricket board - has also
taken a hard stance against giving it any legal status.
The
ICL board will also discuss preparations for the Champions Trophy tournament due
to take place in September/October. At its October 2008 meeting the Board had
agreed the event would take place between 24 September and 5 October 2009.
At that same meeting it was further agreed that because the event was reduced
in duration (12 days including a reserve day for the final instead of the 17 days
set aside in 2008) it would be played in one city. In
terms of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) post 2012 with some members expressing
reservations about the idea of an enhanced Test championship, the ICC Board will
discuss a way forward in the process of developing a fixtures model, given that
the current FTP is due to finish in May 2012. |
