MUMBAI: Motorola's public key infrastructure (PKI) center of excellence in San Diego in the US has been selected by the Wimax Forum to be a root certificate authority for Wimax devices worldwide.

Devices that will connect to a Wimax network, such as cell phones, laptop computers and portable media players, are generally required to have a device certificate in order for that device to be authenticated and then become functional on that network.

Motorola strategy and business development, broadband home solutions VP Mark Depietro says, “Our understanding of the complex WiMax ecosystem, and our experience in mass-scale secure, global hardware manufacturing, assures that Motorola can provide WiMax device manufacturers the highest quality, lowest costs solutions for their PKI needs."

Wimax Forum director of operations Matt Wangler adds, “We selected Motorola because of its long track record in providing PKI solutions that feature the scalability and reliability required for WiMax technology to flourish."

Motorola’s PKI Center has produced approximately 650 million certificates since inception. 180 million certificates were issued in 2008 to authenticate and secure services to devices of all types including cell phones, cable and satellite set top boxes, cable modems, portable media players, two-way radios, and more.
