NEW DELHI: The Dhan Foundation of Madurai has been permitted by the government to establish, maintain and operate a community radio station at Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.

The radio station is expected to be operational within three months, according to the agreement with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

Dhan Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, will set up the Kalanjiam community radio station at Village Vizhunthamavadi, Block-Keelaiyur in Nagapattinam district of the state.

Nagapattinam was largely affected by the tsunami and the new radio station is expected to serve the women, farmers, and fishermen and empower them with information and communication critical for disaster preparedness and management. The community management committee has made linkages with the local government institutions like panchayats, health centres, schools and disaster management related government institutions to establish a disaster management mechanism to face natural calamities.

The Ministry expects that the initiative will provide an opportunity to the local communities to be better informed about the developmental initiatives of the government and promote transparency in the implementation of the schemes.
