MUMBAI:
As the economic slowdown worstens in the US, the Disney ABC
Television Group has announced that it is going to cut its
workforce by five per cent.
The
company will remove 400 jobs by letting go 200 employees and leaving another 200
positions unfilled. The
cuts will affect ABC, ABC News, Disney Channel, ABC Family and SoapNet
Disney-ABC
Television president Anne Sweeney, in a memo sent to staff,
says, "After months of making hard decisions across our
businesses to help us adjust to a weakening economy, we're
now faced with the harsh reality of having to eliminate jobs
in some areas."
The
memo further adds, "This was not an easy decision, nor
one made lightly. The people affected today are our friends
and colleagues, and we are doing all we can for them and their
families during what we know will be a difficult transition."
