MUMBAI:
Even as the entertainment industry discusses issues surrounding
the growth of Indian entertainment at FICCI FRAMES in Mumbai,
the Government today said that the film industry had been
asked to constitute an Export Promotion Forum/Council.
Minister
of State for Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma said
such a Forum, as and when constituted, could seek financial
support from the Government for development of and participation
in export markets.
The
government has already initiated action on some recommendations
of five Core Groups which had been set up by it to ensure
all round development of the film industry. The Groups comprises
representatives of the film industry.
According
to information received by the government on the growing popularity
overseas of Indian films, mainstream cable companies in the
United States have started a Video on Demand for
Indian films. Markets for Indian films are growing steadily
in North Europe, Germany, France and Japan. There is huge
untapped film market in China as well and Latin America is
also considered as a new market for Indian films.
The
Minister stressed that India was taking part in international
film festivals and markets and had also been setting up pavilions
in Cannes, the American and European film markets, and other
places, apart from holding festivals of Indian films in these
countries as part of a cultural exchange programme.
While
audio-visual co-production agreements have been signed with
Italy, United Kingdom, Brazil and Germany, there was a strong
demand at the ongoing FICCI FRAMES for a similar agreement
with the United States.
