| MUMBAI:
The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has granted permission to
Sambhav Social Service Organization for establishing, maintaining and operating
a community radio station (CRS) at Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. As per the
agreement, the community radio station will have to be operational within the
next three months. With this, the total number of community radio stations in
the country will rise to 61.
The
focus community for the project is the Sahariya tribe which is traditionally a
hunting and gathering society. As a result of political, economic and social marginalization,
Sahariya community faces enormous challenges to development. The Sahariya tribe
has been an important constituent in Sambhav's development initiatives since its
founding in1988. The
CRS will empower community members to create and access information relevant to
their local development needs. It aims to address issues that concern the community
through participatory programmes, and improve the quality of life in general and
agricultural activities of the farmers in particular. |
