BANGALORE:
Fearing dilution of viewer interest in the IPL T20, the working
committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)
has denied permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association
(KSCA) to auction players from outside Karnataka.
The BCCI fears that if every state comes up with an idea of
a T20 tourney of its own with teams made up of players from
outside their own states, players may refuse to play for their
own states.
BCCI
secretary N Srinivasan said that the decision that was taken
during the board's working committee meeting in Mumbai yesterday.
"They [Karnataka] asked for the permission about KPL
but we told them that as long as they do not include players
from outside Karnataka we have no problem."
Karnataka
State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary Brijesh Patel says
that the decision was on expected lines and said the tournament
would go ahead as planned with an auction of 40 state cricketers
in Bangalore on today. Charu Sharma, who represents the Frontier
Group which is KPL's partner, has been quoted in reports saying
that the BCCI decision would not affect the popularity of
the tournament.
Earlier
this month, the KSCA pulled in bids worth Rs 350 million spread
over five years for the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) for
the ownership of eight teams. The inaugural Twenty20 KPL,
modeled along the Indian Premier League (IPL) featuring the
eight zonal teams, will be held from 12 - 27 September with
four of the matches in Mysore and the rest in Bangalore under
lights with a white ball. With an increment of two more matches,
Mysore will now see a total of six matches, while Bangalore
will lose two.
Starting 9.30 am today, 48 players, six per team, go under
the hammer in Bangalore. Each of the eight KPL franchisee
was earlier allowed to buy 6 players at the auction, five
non auction second rung players' from Karnataka and three
players from outside the state. The BCCI move has left vacant
the slots for three players. A decision regarding this issue
will be taken by the KSCA later.
The salary cap for six top rung players has been enhanced
by the KSCA from the earlier Rs. 600,000 to Rs. 700,000, with
a minimum cap of Rs.25,0000 per player and an overall minimum
cap of Rs 500,000. The cap for five non-auction players remains
at Rs 400,000 with a minimum salary cap of Rs 10,000 per player.
No cap had been fixed for non state players. Charu Sharma
will be conducting the auction.
