NEW DELHI: Search engine company Google is in talks to buy social micro blogging site Twitter.

According to media reports, the acquisition will help Google in expanding its advertising and social networking platform.

Earlier in November 2008, Facebook had offered to acquire Twitter for $500 million, but it was turned down.

At the time of turning down Facebook's offer, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said, “The company was keen to remain independent to allow it to explore the possible ways of building a functioning revenue model.”

Last month, reports had also emerged that e-commerce website Amazon was considering to buy Twitter.

Twitter.com offers an SMS-based service that allows people to send short text messages to a network of friends.
