MUMBAI: In a bid to increase its high-definition programming line up, Time Warner Cable has formed a partnership with Smithsonian Networks to distribute Smithsonian channel on TWC's HD platform.

The deal enables TWC consumers to access Smithsonian content available in a variety of formats. That includes, 'road runner high speed online' and 'HD on demand' as well as TWC's popular enhanced TV services 'start over' and 'look back'.

Announcing the deal, Smithsonian Networks GM Tom Hayden said, "We are thrilled to be a part of the Time Warner Cable family. This gives us the opportunity to bring the award- winning, original, family-friendly, HD programming that Smithsonian channel has been producing to a much wider audience through TWC's multiple platforms."

Smithsonian Channel is the product from the joint venture between Showtime Networks and Smithsonian Institution Inc. Smithsonian channel HD features documentaries, short-subject explorations and ground-breaking programmes highlighting America's historical, cultural and scientific heritage.

In 2008, Smithsonian Channel became the youngest channel to win an Emmy awards for its achievement in craft, cinematography, nature documentaries.

"This is a great opportunity for Time Warner Cable to provide programming that highlights American culture and history, in high-definition and on-demand," says TWC VP of programming Susan Weinstein.
