MUMBAI: Sony Pictures has entered into an agreement to support a theater-chain upgrade to digitally convert 20,000 US and Canadian cinema screens at an estimated cost of $1 billion.

The implementation of the digital projectors in theatres will enhance the screenings of 3D movies.

At the time of its foundation in October, the Digital Cinema Implementation Partner (DCIP) had stated that digitisation of theatres would be completed within three-and-half-years but got delayed due to the economic conditions.

Walt Disney's Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Lionsgate has also signed agreement with DCIP.
