DELHI: The National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan
Employees (NFADE) has reiterated its demand for repeal of
the Prasar Bharati Act and for continuing its agitation against
attempts to invite other parties to cover the Commonwealth
Games next year.
An
umbrella organisation of 21 service associations of around
40,000 employees working in various disciplines of AIR and
Doordarshan, the NFADE was pained that some media reports
had "unnecessarily tried to drag the Federation and thereby
employees of AIR and Doordarshan against the present Prasar
Bharati CEO BS Lalli."
Though
the National Federation is fighting for the interest of the
organisation and its employees, it said "we have always
and will continue to extend our full support and cooperation
to the organisation for the interest of AIR and Doordarshan
and its employees and are not against any official of Prasar
Bharati or the Information and Broadcasting Ministry."
According
to Chairman S Anilkumar, "NFADE is agitating against
the recent invitation by Prasar Bharati for the Expression
of Interest (EOI) by private parties for the coverage of the
forthcoming Commonwealth Games which is nothing but belittling
the professionalism in Doordarshan that had proved its credentials
during the Asian Games of 1982, when it was in its infancy."
While
welcoming the decision of the Union Cabinet that all Central
Government employees recruited for the purpose of and working
in AIR and Doordarshan as on 5 October, 2007 will continue
to be on deemed deputation till their retirement, the Federation
has reiterated the demand to retain the National and Public
Service Broadcaster with the Government by repealing the Prasar
Bharati Act 1990, especially in the light of developments
in the electronic media in India for the last few years.
Anilkumar
said that the NFADE is struggling against the contradictions
prevailing in Prasar Bharati Act and its relevance in the
present scenario. NFADE has demonstrated its strength by way
of conducting mass gate meetings, hunger strikes carried all
over the country and a silent march of over 4000 employees
from Mandi House to Parliament in 2004 that resulted in formation
of a high-power Group of Ministers (GOM) to look into various
aspects of Prasar Bharati.
