DELHI: Rates of wages for working and other newspaper employees
are to be increased at the rate of 30 per cent of basic wage.
According
to a decision of the Union Cabinet, the interim enhancement
is to be paid by the newspaper establishments with effect
from 8 January, 2008.
The Government had announced through notifications in May
2007 the constitution of the Wage Boards for Working Journalists
and Non-working Journalists of newspapers and news agencies
with effect from 24 May 2007. These Wage Boards had been constituted
for the purpose of fixing or revising rates of wages of working
journalists and newspaper employees and non-journalists newspapers
employees in accordance with the provisions of the Working
Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of service)
and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955. The Boards have been
asked to submit their reports within the stipulated period
of 3 years.
Both
the Wage Boards will have 10 members each headed by Dr. Justice
K. Narayana Kurup, a former Judge of Kerala High Court and
has also served as Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court.
