MUMBAI: Tony Burman has been appointed as the managing director of Al Jazeera network's English channel.

Burman's appointment follows the channel's strategy to expand its programming network, bureaus and audience reach.

Al Jazeera network DG Wadah Khanfar said, "The current change is designed to enrich the core of Al Jazeera's mission - its journalism of depth, its commitment to providing a diversity of viewpoints, its dedication to giving "a voice to the voiceless" and ensuring that the human story is at the centre of the news agenda."

Burman said, "I look forward to building on my predecessor Parsons' achievements. In the months ahead, I will put an emphasis on the expansion of Al Jazeera's audience reach into important new areas of the world like North America."

Prior to this, Burman has worked as an editor in chief of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC News). He has also been responsible for the integration of CBC's radio, T.V and online operations.
