MUMBAI: The Essel Group has announced that the Indian Cricket League (ICL) will have a prize money corpus of $3.08 million (Rs 120.3 million) for its Edelweiss 20s Challenge, which kicks off tomorrow (9 March).

The winners of the second edition of the ICL tournament will stand to gain Rs 25 million while the runner-up will cash in Rs 12.5 million. The third-placed side will pocket Rs 5 million.

The financial incentive for every win at the league stage will be Rs 2.5 million, resulting in a total prize money of Rs 70 million at the league stage.

The incentive for individual performance during the 34 matches will be Rs 200,000 for the Man of the Match and Rs 4 million for the Man of the Series.

ICL executive board member Kiran More Says, "Financial incentive is an important motivating factor for professional cricketers and we, at the ICL board, are proud to announce a magnificent corpus of Rs 120.3 million for Edelweiss 20s Challenge, breaking new barriers in the history of domestic Indian cricket."

Tony Greig, another ICL executive board member, said: "It is a fulfilling experience to see the ICL make rapid strikes in terms of growing bigger and better in only its first year of operations. Multiple venues, additional teams, an improved player base and to top it all, a very impressive prize money to be won, should make the tournament an enthralling experience for both - the players and cricket fans."

The tournament concludes on 7 April. It will be held in three locations – Hyderabad, Chandigarh (Panchkula) and Gurgaon. Two new teams – Ahmedabad Rockets and Lahore Badshahs have also been added to the existing six teams in order to make the tournament more comprehensive and competitive.

The matches will air on Zee Sports and Ten Sports. There is a match every evening and double headers on specific weekends. Each team will play against each other once in the league format, followed by semi-finals. The third position classification match concludes with the best of three match finals.
