MUMBAI: National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has announced the first annual Nat Geo Wild Rising Star Student Prize to be presented at this year’s October 2008 Wildscreen Festival.

This is a wildlife and environmental film festival and takes place in Bristol, the UK. The award supports students with a passion for wildlife, eager to break through on the filmmaking scene.

The winning submission will be aired on the Nat Geo Wild. This is the broadcaster's wildlife channel that airs in the UK, Italy, Central Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore and Southeast Asia.

NGCI EVP (content) Sydney Suissa says, “It is an honour to recognise the achievements of these bright young stars whose enthusiasm for the wildlife genre will lead to tomorrow’s most captivating natural history programmes.”

Wildscreen CEO Harriet Nimmo says, “This is a wonderful way for young film students to gain a foothold into the world of wildlife filmmaking – and a unique opportunity to get their creative talents aired on the Nat Geo Wild Channel.”

The winner will be flown to Bristol for the Wildscreen Festival which takes place from 19–24 October 2008 and the award ceremony on 22 October. Along with the prize trip to Wildscreen in the UK and submission airing on Nat Geo Wild, the recipient will receive a three-month internship at NGCI’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., as well as a copy of Final Cut Pro – the professional non-linear editing system – courtesy of Apple, Inc. Housing, flight and other accommodations for the internship are not included.

To apply, participants must download an application form from www.wildscreenfestival.org/risingstarUH. Individual applicants should submit short films up to 15 minutes in length. Productions must have an aspect of the natural world as their focus such as revealing new facts about animal behaviour, a natural habitat, ecology or humankind’s relationship with the natural environment and with animals.

Entries must be submitted by 18 April 2008 and the entry fee is £20.
